Stonechurch Vineyards

Stonechurch Vineyards

Situated on a quiet country road, surrounded by vineyards, Stonechurch Vineyards is an ideal spot to sit, relax, and enjoy. The Hunse Family, the owners and operators of Stonechurch, have farmed at the current location since 1955. From humble beginnings, two young Dutch immigrants, Lambert and Grace Hunse, grew the business, taking the farm through multiple phases. The first years of farming were the truck-farming years, with tomatoes, cucumbers, asparagus and strawberries as the main crops. At the same time, Lambert built his first poultry barn. Once the family was more established, the farm was planted to fruit trees and grapes. The farm had extensive holdings in peaches, cherries, pears, and plums. The poultry side of the business grew as well, as more barns were built to meet the growing demand of the Ontario market.

In 1989, Stonechurch Vineyards emerged from Hunse Farms as a small winery. Due to its success, the fruit trees were replaced with grape vines, and now, the entire farm of 170 acres is planted to grapes. The poultry side of the business was sold off to allow full attention to be paid to the winery.

Lambert and Grace retired in 1995, and their son, Rick, took over the business. He expanded the winery, acquired more land, built a new retail store, and improved the overall appeal to our guests. Tragically, Rick passed away in 2005. In the intervening time, Lambert and Grace came out of retirement, and Hank, another son, agreed to return to the farm after a 30 year hiatus.

In the past three years, Stonechurch Vineyards has undergone some substantial changes. We hired Jamie Evans as our new wine maker, we invested heavily in new harvesting equipment, as well as wine-making equipment. All of these changes have markedly improved the quality of the wines, so much so that we now make wines for other wineries as well.

Many of those who appreciate and collect wine have discovered that a journey to the heart of wine country adds an indescribable dimension to the appreciation of the distinctiveness of each fine wine. In that spirit, Inniskillin invites you to come by to fully experience our VQA wines at our wineries in both Niagara and the Okanagan Valley. Come to experience, firsthand, the full range of Inniskillin’s Premium Estate Wines, while enjoying the spectacular sights, the regional culinary specialties and the outstanding hospitality in two domains that are truly two of Canada’s great natural treasures – the Niagara Peninsula and the Okanagan Valley.  We look forward to toasting your arrival!

Inniskillin is pleased to welcome new and regular guests back to visit and experience our renovations. Upon entering the driveway through our gates there is a new entrance which leads to increased parking through pods set amongst the vineyards. The vast Piazza greets guests and connects the new Founders’ Hall to the existing Wine Boutique in the historic Brae Burn Barn which dates back to the 1920s. The design of the barn is intriguing and is believed to have been inspired by the work of famed architect  Frank Lloyd Wright. Founders’ Hall, which includes a Demonstration Kitchen, is a major hospitality area  for public and private functions. Founders’ Hall is also home to the Riedel Room, a private tasting space where visitors can explore the difference that Riedel Glassware makes to the aroma and taste of wines. Our underground wine library and barrel cellar offers a private space for tastings and receptions.

Our renovations will allow increased wine and culinary experiences throughout the year.
