Palatine Hills Estate Winery

Posted April 16, 2009 by brian in Ontario Wineries | Comments Off

Established in 2003, Palatine Hills Estate Winery grows vines on 187 acres in renowned Niagara-on-the-Lake. Owners John and Barbara Neufeld have been grape growers for over 30 years. Little surprise that they know a thing or two about wine. Their keen ability to nurture grapes eventually grew to a desire to run a winery as well. So they set out to form an unparalleled team which includes veteran winemaker David Hojnoski whose vast experience paid off quickly when his first Icewine for Palatine earned a gold medal at the 2003 Ontario Wine Awards. The wine was also named Ontario Wine of the Year. But don’t take our word for it, come experience our boutique winery for yourself. We’re open all year long and we bid you welcome. Stop in and experience the laid-back charm and friendliness. We make quality wines, and they’re affordable. Walk through the vineyards or visit us during our events.

Palatine Hills grows the following viniferous varietals:

Stonechurch Vineyards

Stonechurch Vineyards

Situated on a quiet country road, surrounded by vineyards, Stonechurch Vineyards is an ideal spot to sit, relax, and enjoy. The Hunse Family, the owners and operators of Stonechurch, have farmed at the current location since 1955. From humble beginnings, two young Dutch immigrants, Lambert and Grace Hunse, grew the business, taking the farm through multiple phases. The first years of farming were the truck-farming years, with tomatoes, cucumbers, asparagus and strawberries as the main crops. At the same time, Lambert built his first poultry barn. Once the family was more established, the farm was planted to fruit trees and grapes. The farm had extensive holdings in peaches, cherries, pears, and plums. The poultry side of the business grew as well, as more barns were built to meet the growing demand of the Ontario market.

In 1989, Stonechurch Vineyards emerged from Hunse Farms as a small winery. Due to its success, the fruit trees were replaced with grape vines, and now, the entire farm of 170 acres is planted to grapes. The poultry side of the business was sold off to allow full attention to be paid to the winery.

Lambert and Grace retired in 1995, and their son, Rick, took over the business. He expanded the winery, acquired more land, built a new retail store, and improved the overall appeal to our guests. Tragically, Rick passed away in 2005. In the intervening time, Lambert and Grace came out of retirement, and Hank, another son, agreed to return to the farm after a 30 year hiatus.

In the past three years, Stonechurch Vineyards has undergone some substantial changes. We hired Jamie Evans as our new wine maker, we invested heavily in new harvesting equipment, as well as wine-making equipment. All of these changes have markedly improved the quality of the wines, so much so that we now make wines for other wineries as well.

Konzelmann Estate Winery

Posted February 4, 2009 by brian in Ontario Wineries | No comments yet

Konzelmann Estate Winery, Niagara’s Exclusive Lakefront Winery, was established in Canada in 1984. Herbert Konzelmann chose the site on the shores of Lake Ontario due to the meso-climate, which is similar to the Alsace region in France. The wonderful balance of sun, soil, airflow and moisture conditions of this vineyard are ideal for the production of clean, delicate and fruity premium quality wines.  Join us at ‘The Konzelmann Winery Boutique and Tasting Bar’, and discover why we are heralded for providing one of the most friendly, informative and educational experiences in Niagara’s wine country. All year round we offer a wide variety of over 30 different VQA selections of quality wine for tasting and for purchase. Consequently, if you are looking for a particular favorite variety of wine or have an interest in discovering a new one, we have it here for you!

The protection provided by the nearby Niagara Escarpment, combined with the moderating influence of the lake, provides a longer growing period for the “noble” Vitis Vinifera vines of Pinot Noir, Riesling, and Chardonnay grapes. The cool-climate viticulture conditions are often enhanced by an “Indian summer”, a warming in autumn which allows for a later harvest, therefore creating a fine acid balance and natural sugar content in the grape. Also, with morning dew that settles on the grapes on his Lakeshore vineyards gives his wines a uniquely delicate and fruity character, comparable to those of the Alsace region of France. This positive climate produces grapes with a more constant Brix, or sugar level, a very positive attribute to Ontario.

Jackson Triggs Winery

Posted February 1, 2009 by admin in Ontario Wineries | No comments yet

Jackson-Triggs has a little more than fifty years experience in the wine industry between them, Allan Jackson and Don Triggs established Jackson-Triggs Vintners in the Fall of 1993 .By the spring of 1995, they were proud to introduce their Proprietors’ Selection Merlot, and in September, their Proprietors’ Selection Sauvignon Blanc.

The Sauvignon Blanc was so exceptional that it prompted one wine reviewer to write, “I tried calling Ripley’s Believe it or Not, for here was a Canadian-made wine that knocked the socks off the imported Sauvignon Blancs.” (Michael Vaughan, Vintage Assessments, October 1995.) The Proprietors’ Selection Sauvignon Blanc is still one of Jackson-Triggs’ most popular table wines in restaurants and homes from coast to coast.
