Ontario Skateboard Parks

Posted December 23, 2008 by admin in Sports | No comments yet

Skateboard Park Guidelines:

Most outdoor parks are free and do not require permission forms, helmets, or pads (there are exceptions).

When the venue is indoors, assume there is a fee (anywhere from $5 to $15 for the day), and often the operator will insist on signed waivers for those under 18, and safety equipment like pads and helmets. Privately operated indoor parks often have a pro shop and snack bar. Almost all indoor parks provide washrooms.

If there is a phone number provided it is either the municipality or the private owner. In any case, we suggest you make phone calls or talk to locals before heading out of your way to a strange park. Happy Skating!

Amhurstburg
It’s a steel (overpriced arc-ramp) park – a bunch of 5 foot quarters, a five foot mini , a 4 foot spine, a 2.5 foot jump box. Simcoe street.

Ancaster
The equipment is all the old ramps from The Grind in Dundas. It has a funbox, flat
box (with ledge going down), 4 quarter pipes (numerous sizes), wallride, flat bank,
spine, and tons of rails and grind boxes. It is open from July to September.
Take the 403 up the escarpment from Hamilton to the Fiddlers Green exit. Spring
Valley arena.

Ajax
Modular parks with ramps, ledges and rails on large asphalt area
North and south Ajax at Community Centres

Barrie
A large, spacious, concrete park with flat banks, pyramid, ledges, quarter pipes,
flat bar, hand rail, and a half bowl. Minimal lighting allows skating until approx. 10
pm.
Park St. (beside the armories)

Beaverton
A fun park with movable objects, including: manual boxes, 3 quarters, a box with spines and an adjustable rail and a ledge up across and down, two kickers (straight and curved).

Bobcaygeon
The ground is smooth asphalt and the ramps are wooden with plastic surfaces.
The setup includes a quarter pipe, pyramid, speed ramp, box, and moveable rails.
Its not worth a road trip, as some of the obstacles are suffering from disrepair.
The closest “shop” is Buckeye Source for Sports.

Bowmanville
Similar design as Pickering, but fewer obstacles and harsher lines. Still worth a visit if you are in the area and dying to skate. Waverly and Hwy.2 behind rec centre.

Brampton – South Fletcher’s Skate Park
Helmets are mandatory for skaters.
500 Ray Lawson Blvd. in Brampton, Ontario

Brooklin
Nice big blue ramps and obstacles. Smooth, slight downhill for nice
set-up speed. Lots of rippers here. One of the better parks in Ontario. Nice setting.
Surrounded by grass and trees. Take 401 to Whitby. North on Brock to Brooklin.
Hit Hwy7 and go east to the arena.

Burlington – Maple Park
A tight little concrete park with an amazing bowl to launch out of, some stairs, a
pyramid, a quaterpipe with way too much vert, some flat rails, ledges surrounding
the one side and a little bump thats useless. Its located right beside the
Mapleview mall and beside some pretty nice ditches.

Collingwood
Concrete park with mini ramp and street course. A membership and/or fee is
required. For directions: (705) 445-1030 ext. 244

Courtice
Nice smooth concrete park with 2 quarter pipes, cloverleaf pool, rails and freestyle area. Park is layed out so you can actually loop the park with one push. Located at the Courtice Community Complex, on Courtice Rd, just north of Hwy#2 (king st).

Dunnville
A tennis court park with ¼ pipe, flat bank, grind box, hand rail, kickers, launch. Street course good for beginners. Free. No pads required. Located in Lions park.

Gravenhurst Skatepark
Rumoured new park by VDZ designs for summer 2003?
Grimsby
Tight, outdoor concrete park with banks, 1/4 pipes, tables, ledges, pyramid, and mini-half.
Christie St.

Hamilton – Parkdale
It is a new, all-concrete park with roll-ins with rail / ledge on one side and quarterpipe/ banks on the other. There is a table top in between and a small rail. East Hamilton, corner of Queenston and Parkdale (visible from main street) in all. Washrooms in arena.

Hamilton – Beasley Bowl
A nifty park whose namesake is an ex-wading pool, turned bowl, with a serious
kicker at one end. Little bumps and a ledge, and a decent quarter pipe. Annual
contest draws a serious crowd and all the locals rip. You’ve seen the photos of
Appleyard and Cameron ripping here! Check it out. Beasley Community Centre 27
Elgin Rd. (905) 546-4042

Hamilton – Evolushun skate shop and park
Two 16 foot wide mini ramps, back to back, but not with a spine. It also features a street section, but it’s pretty tight. It cost 10 bucks a session, and helmets are required.
1508 Upper James Hamilton (905) 383-6575

Hanover
Half pipe, pyramid (with two rails), quarter pipes, wall ride, and a portable grind
box on top of picnic tables. Located on 7th ave, where the old pool used to be.

Havelock
The park, as minimal as it is, is pretty well built. It looks like one of those classic Powell fun box designs, with two flatbanks and two small kickers on opposite sides of the box. There’s a little extension on one kicker so you can do little wall rides or stalls, and in the centre of one flatbank there’s a rail. There’s also a 6 foot ramp that’s in great shape.
Highway 7 (half way between TO and Ottawa)

Ingersoll
The park includes a couple of quarter pipes, a fun box, grind rails, and much
more. Located at the Optimist Club on Thames St.

Kanata
The only permanent skatepark in the Ottawa area (except for On Deck skateshop’s mini ramp). Kanata is a 10 minute drive west of Ottawa. The park is concrete and contains a bowl, pyramid w/ a kinked ledge, half-pyramid w/ a straight ledge, 8 set with ledges, 3 set, long rail, small spine, roll-ins, quarter pipes, banks, and curbs. The design has a number of flaws but the park is still pretty fun.
Walter Baker Park, near the KRC, which is off Terry Fox Drive.
www.skatekanata.com/skatepark.html

Kincardine
It has two 8 ft. 1/4 pipes, a fly box, a pyramid, two flat banks, a fun box, one 10 ft.
vert ramp, and two sets of grind rails. Helmet required. Located at the Davidson
Center.

Kingston - Revelation
A new indoor skatepark. It has quarter pipes, banks, a pyramid, table tops / ramps
with ledges, a grind bar, and a funbox.
Exit the 401at Montreal St. Drive south and turn right on MaCaully. Look for Wally
Elmer Arena.

A concrete park with a pyramid, bowl, quarter pipe, rail, banks and spines.

Lakefield
A small park inside the tennis courts with a rough asphalt ground
and old wooden ramps. A new park may be built soon, and a mini-ramp may be added.

town! Shame on those responsible! Neighbouring Peterborough has a
decent park.

a three with ledges going off both sides as well as tons of other good stuff.

Concrete with several ramps and a half-pipe.
Little Lake Park.

Another old tennis court turned into a park, the obstacles include: a 4ft. mini ramp, 3 1/4 pipes, a fly box, and a fun box. Helmet required.
Campbell DeVore Park on Cork St (behind the Community Centre)

An indoor park with: 3 regular 1/4 pipes, 1 small 1/4 pipe, volcano, kicker, spines, boxes, picnic table. Helmets must be worn at all times.

Oakville – Shell Park
Brand new facility looks to be the mother of Ontario’s new facilities. An outdoor,
concrete mecca with a ton of every kind of skateboard related obstacle you can
think of. The park was the subject of a profile in the spring 2000 edition of
SBCskateboard magazine. Worth a very long drive from anywhere.
Call Hustler skateshop for directions.

Toronto – (Downtown) – Shred Central
The indoor refuge for the urban skate rat. This park is small, but the owners put a
helluva lot of work into the facility. Witness the recent construction of a bowl with
spine! Also has a nice lane with quarter pipe/flat bank to funbox with ledge and rail
and a wallride at the other end. 19 St. Nicholas (one block west of Yonge and
Wellesley) (416) 923-9842
shredcentral.com
Toronto – Cummer
This park does feature a large bowl, though some find it hard to get used to. The design is flawed. The lines that might have been possible have been compromised by an attempt to bend the park around a corner where the bowl sits. The result is two distinctly separate areas that should have been one. The obstacles themselves are pretty decent.
It’s a 5 minute drive north from the 401, up Leslie St, and a few blocks north of Finch, behind the rec centre.

Toronto – Scarborough – Rouge Hill
6,000 sq ft concrete park with: half bowl, quarter pipe, various rails, euro gap, flat banks, and Hubba ledge. The Perception shop is conveniently located right next door. Lawrence Ave/ Port Union Rd. (416) 724-5228

Located at Rutherford and Keele.

Welland

Whitby – Iroqouis Park
This is a pretty decent park with mighty big obstacles. It is slightly flawed but a
step in the right direction. Pyramid, quarters, flat bars, ledges, volcano and flat
banks. 401 and Brock beside rec centre.

Toronto Climbing Academy

Posted December 15, 2008 by admin in Ontario Attractions Blog, Sports | No comments yet

Since opening in 1993, the Toronto Climbing Academy has hosted many indoor climbing events and continues to lead in presenting exciting indoor climbing options.

The Climbing Centre features 11 distinct climbing areas: from Caves, Overhangs and Cracks to Campus Boards and a fully equipped Training Area.

Our Instructional Programs offer both a philosophical and technical understanding of climbing concepts.

TCA provides group and private instruction to beginners through to professional level climbers.

The TCA Portable Climbing Walls bring excitement and are the hub of attention at corporate events and introduce climbing to various communities. The Portable Walls are available year round.

GYM CLIMBING: Climbing on artificial walls is giving more and more people their first taste of the exciting world of rock climbing.

Climbing in the controlled environment of a gym is a great way to learn how to climb, and is the safest way to enjoy vertical movement. Indoor climbing provides an excellent, full-body workout.

You will find a fun, social atmosphere at the Toronto Climbing Academy.

SPORT CLIMBING: Climbing style that features safety equipped routes, on which protection comes from pre-placed bolts. Things are always more demanding outside than in the gym.

At the Toronto Climbing Academy, we offer a unique experience for you or your group. Rock climbing is an exciting and challenging activity, and provides an excellent environment for building leadership, self-confidence and teamwork skills. The experience of reaching the top of the wall is exhilarating and provides a rewarding sense of achievement to all participants.

What to expect:
Our instructors will start by fitting everyone with a safety harness. We will then introduce your group to the basics of climbing safety and climbing techniques. In addition, everyone will have plenty of time to climb the artificial rock-faces with assistance and encouragement from our instructors.
